The Centre’s fleet at the Brightlingsea Coastal Sailing Centre shall at all times only operate under the control of a Senior Instructor, defined as the Duty S.I., and authorised by the Principal as:
1) holding all appropriate qualifications,
2) experienced with the equipment and operating procedures and
3) experienced in tidal sailing and familiar with local sailing hazards, including areas of shallows and risks associated with shipping in the River Colne and Brightlingsea Creek.
A Senior Instructor seeking recognition as an Authorised S.I. shall show that he/she has appropriate qualifications by providing up-to-date copies to the Principal, either as photocopies or as scanned PDF or JPG electronic copies, of as many of the following documents as he or she holds:
Dinghy Instructor Certificate (coastal) or as endorsement to S.I. Certificate
Dinghy Instructor Certificate (advanced) or as endorsement to S.I. Certificate
Senior Instructor Certificate (coastal)
National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 or equivalent
Safety Boat Certificate or equivalent
Powerboat Instructor Certificate with Coastal and Safety Boat endorsements
First Aid Certificate
VHF Radio Licence
Any Senior Instructor wishing to be recognised as an Authorised S.I. shall have significant previous sailing experience at the Brightlingsea Coastal Sailing Centre.
Recognition of a Senior Instructor as an Authorised S.I. would normally require 2 stages of induction, involving not less that one day while shadowing the Authorised Duty S.I. and a second day acting as Duty S.I. under observation by an existing Authorised S.I.
The Authorised Duty S.I. during the first day would be required to sign a declaration confirming that the first stage of induction took place successfully.
The Authorised S.I. during the second visit would be required to sign a declaration confirming that the second stage of induction took place successfully in that during the visit the Senior Instructor seeking recognition as an Authorised S.I. operated successfully as Duty S.I. and demonstrated experience with the Centre’s equipment and operating procedures and familiarity with local sailing hazards.
The Senior Instructor undergoing induction would then sign a declaration confirming appropriate qualifications, familiarity with local waters and conditions and that he or she will operate at the Centre in accordance with the Centre’s operating procedures.
The Principal would then issue a Certificate of Recognition as an Authorised S.I. valid for a period of 3 years.
When any qualification documents previously sent expire or are re-validated, the Authorised S.I. shall send new up-to-date copies of those documents to the Principal. Without such up-to-date copies, the recognition shall lapse.
Prior to the re-issue of further Certificates of Recognition to any previously Authorised S.I.’s, Authorised S.I.’s shall be monitored to confirm that their operating of the NLYST fleet at Brightlingsea continues to take place in accordance with these operating procedures.
